Tasty and affordable places for students in Plymouth

As students, we can’t always afford to go out for a cooked meal.

We normally have to accept that it’s either going to be boiled pasta, an oven-cooked pizza, a sandwich or something we find in the back of the fridge for dinner. However, there are still some great affordable hidden food establishments in Plymouth waiting just for you to try.

Umami Ramen Bar
102 Tavistock Place | Sherwell

Umami is a Japanese, vegetarian-friendly restaurant located near the Plymouth College of Art and The Caffeine Club, that serves a range of Asian cuisine. Their menu includes dishes such as ramen broths with various fillings, buns and snacks of spicy wings, pork ribs and homemade kimchi. With an average price for a meal being between £4 - £12, this new restaurant is collecting a glowing reputation with a five-star review for their food, value for money and service on TripAdvisor.

Bar Burritos
5 Quay Road | Barbican

Bar Burritos is a new bar and restaurant located on The Barbican that serves freshly prepared Mexican and Latin American cuisine. Come along and try their burritos or nachos served with a range of delicious fillings and sauces. All of their food can be accompanied by one of their craft beers, wines, ciders or premium cocktails, suitable for vegetarians. With a certificate of excellence under their belt, this new establishment has a four-star rating for their food, service and value for money on TripAdvisor. This is a great place to go for a simple bite to eat that offers a gorgeous view of the Harbour. The restaurant is child-friendly and has an average meal price of £5.

The B-Bar
Castle Street | The Barbican

The B-Bar is known as Plymouth’s most theatrical watering hole, located within the Barbican Theatre, found up a cobbled street just off Plymouth’s cultural quarter which we all know as The Barbican. By day, The B-Bar is a Thai noodle bar offering fresh noodle boxes and other special dishes from 12 noon to 9 pm, seven days a week. Then at night, The B-Bar transforms into a musical hub showcasing live music performances. With an average meal costing between £5 - £10, this stylish and retro restaurant offers a 4.5-star service with positive reviews for their food, value for money, atmosphere and service. This bar also offers vegetarian, vegan & gluten-free options and is child-friendly.

West Hoe Fish Fryers is located on Plymouth’s Barbican and is a traditional British seafood, fast food restaurant. For anyone who is around The Barbican area, this restaurant is the perfect place to pick up their famous portion of fish and chips or even indulge in one of their pies. The fish they serve is fresh, covered in a crispy batter and accompanied with a large serving of tasty chips which you can have with a range of toppings. The establishment has been given over 750 reviews on TripAdvisor and has accumulated an overall star rating of 4.5. With reasonable prices, this local chippie, with its happy atmosphere has become one of Plymouth’s favourite seafood, fast food locations.

Cap’n Jaspers
The Whitehouse Pier | The Barbican

If you’re from Plymouth, you’ll know about Cap’n Jaspers. Opened in 1978, this classic, British cafe is located on The Whitehouse Pier at The Barbican, so while you‘re indulging in one of the many freshly prepared meals, you can overlook the harbour. The cafe offers meals that you wouldn’t expect to see in a cafe. Situated in the cobbled streets of The Barbican, this delightful little bakery has been reviewed as ‘reliably delicious’, ‘a hidden gem’ and ‘a point of joy in Plymouth’. Whether you’re in the mood for some freshly made artisan bread and other baked goods or local speciality coffee, Jacka’s Bakery is where you want to be. The average price for a meal is £10 and their food, value, service and atmosphere is all rated four stars and above.
