Stand Up to Cancer

Stand Up To Cancer: fundraising ideas to show cancer who's boss

Today, in collaboration with organisations such as Cancer Research UK and Channel 4, the 2019 Stand Up to Cancer campaign kicks off.

The primary objective of this fundraising campaign is to speed up the process of life-saving research into cancer treatments in order to give hope to generations and increase people's chances of survival.

All of the proceeds from Stand Up to Cancer-led activities contribute to what they call the 'Research You Fund'. The money from this fund helps accelerate promising lab results into new experimental tests and treatments for those battling with the disease. Stand Up to Cancer have set themselves a target to help inspire the UK and drive forward their campaign: by 2034, they want three in four people to survive cancer thanks to accelerated research and increased treatment options.

Want to join this national movement? There are lots of ways to support Stand Up to Cancer. No matter what your strengths, interests or background, there is a fundraising event that suits you. But, if you still think that there isn't, you can just make up your own fundraising event which incorporates the thing you love the most. If events management isn't your thing, you can always join in with a friend's fundraiser or simply donate to the cause through the phone, text or Instagram!

Sink or Swim

Between 11th and 25th October, Stand Up to Cancer wants you to push yourselves to the limit with a fortnight of fundraising, and one of their main fundraising events which you can do is the 'Sink or Swim' challenge!

This challenge, quite simply, involves swimming the length of the English Channel (approximately 350 miles). This is a great activity to do with flatmates, friends, family or co-workers, as you're required to get a relay team together as part of the challenge.

If you're nervous about putting yourself out there, this group activity might be the perfect fit for you. It enables you to support one another in your training, generate some healthy competition and increase your health and fitness! The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer

Although The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer series runs in the spring, you can hold your own Bake-Off in aid of Stand Up to Cancer whenever you want! It is a great alternative if, like me, you would much prefer to eat lots of cake as opposed to engaging in an intense exercise regimen.

The best part is that you can still make just as much of a difference, with Stand Up to Cancer providing all the resources you, your friends and your family need to ensure that the fundraising event is a success.

Do you and your bestie fancy yourselves as the next Mel & Sue? Find out more about how to run the event here.

Host a Roast

Take your Sunday Roast that extra mile and help beat cancer over a meal with friends or family! You could ask them to donate how much they think your roast is worth, or set a price for them to enjoy the meal whilst contributing towards a good cause.

Crafts and Laughs

A lot of Stand Up to Cancer initiatives have the dual purpose of getting you to work with your loved ones, and the Crafts and Laughs fundraiser is no different. If you or your friends have a secret knack for painting, knitting or pottery, then why not get them to use their skills for good? Come together for an afternoon to sell your creations or teach each other new skills and hobbies for a donation.

Unpredictable Dress Up

Get your seminar group, society committee or workmates together for a social. The challenge? Get dressed up in the craziest, wackiest and most unpredictable costume possible! You could do a fundraising raffle for best dressed.

Quiz Up

Got an Alexa for Christmas that's gathering dust? Put it to use and host a Stand Up to Cancer fundraising quiz!

Get people to pay to play or donate as part of a forfeit when they lose. Even if you don't have an Amazon device, why not make up your own questions or find some online?

Fitness Fortnight

If swimming the English Channel is a bit steep but you still want to challenge yourself, you can take part of a 'Fitness Fortnight' in aid of Stand Up to Cancer and get people to sponsor you! You can do workouts at home, join a gym, go for a run—the purpose is to push yourself, raise some money and get fit in the process.

You can find out more about how to run your own fundraising event in aid of Stand Up to Cancer here.
