Real life scary stories that you shouldn’t read before you go to sleep

Everyone has a scary story or creepy experience that they can’t explain, whether you’ve seen an actual ghost or heard a frightening noise in the middle of the night.

Listed below are some truly frightening encounters that might just keep you up at night.

1. Footsteps in the attic

“When I was little and stayed at my grandmother’s house, I could always hear someone walking about in the attic. When I told my grandmother she’d say shut up, you’re just imagining things, it’s probably mice. But I was sure it sounded like human footsteps.

Then, years later when I was fifteen, my Dad got drunk and told me that my grandfather, after falling from a tree had had half his body paralysed. He got really depressed and committed suicide in the attic of the house where my grandmother still lives. I can’t help but wonder if it was him that I heard wandering around above me all that time.”

2. Cold Christmas

“When I was sixteen I was riding a moped with my mate. It was dusky. We were riding around for fun not going anywhere in particular and saw a road to a place called Cold Christmas.

Riding down the road I felt an evil presence that made me stop my moped. My mate, not even noticing me, had stopped too. When I asked what was wrong he said that he had also just felt like there was something really nasty there. We decided to leave and as soon as we turned around we were okay again. The feeling I had was so awful that I will never go back there.”

Cold Christmas is the site of a child burial ground and reputedly haunted, with people hearing growling, feeling presences and even seeing black figures. You can read about it here.

3. Come find me

“I was babysitting in a huge house, so big that the family had baby monitors in their children’s bedrooms because they were so far away from the living room, even though their children were about six years old. Sometimes I would hear mumbling or snivelling through the baby monitors so I would go upstairs to check that the children were okay.

I didn’t want to wake them up so instead of switching on the hallway lights I would use my phone torch to see where I was going. The hallway was two stories high and had a huge old mirror facing the bottom of the stairs. It must have been my fifth time checking on the children when I got to the bottom of the stairs and, swinging my torch across the room, I noticed something in the mirror. Written in white writing along the bottom of the mirror was ‘I’m somewhere in the house, come find me’.

I was so scared but the parents were due back in half an hour so I just stayed in the well-lit living room and hurried home as soon as they returned. They never invited me back to babysit but I was pretty thankful for that.”

4. China doll

“When I was eleven I owned a china doll that I put away in a little box because it creeped me out. Years later I was reading about ghosts possessing dolls and I thought my doll would hate me for shutting it away so I took it out, said sorry and placed it at the foot of my bed. I placed it facing away from me because I was scared of it staring at me in the night.

The next morning I woke up and the doll was facing me. I got scared and locked it in the box again. When I went back to look for it a few months later, I couldn’t find it anywhere.”

5. The Hautboy

“We were staying at an old hotel in Surrey called the Hautboy. When we got to the room I had the feeling something was watching us. That night I woke up. It was freezing cold and I thought I saw a woman standing at the end of the bed. When I tried to get back to sleep, I had the feeling that it was standing next to me. I told my husband that there was something in the room and he simply replied “yes I know”.

The next morning I looked to see if the thing at the end of the bed could have been light coming under the door but there was no gap and it was tight to the carpet. My husband said that he had been aware of it standing next to him and had seen orbs and heard it whispering. Hotel staff confirmed that the hotel was haunted.”

6. Unexplained noises

“It was the second time I had babysat for a family. It was quiet, with the kids in bed and me sat in the living room watching TV. Out of nowhere there was a very loud, very human noise. I’d never heard such a sound before and I can only describe it as a mixture between a growl and someone choking. It came from directly outside the living room door.

At first I panicked thinking it could be one of the children but when I went to the hallway where I had heard the noise there was no one there. I ran upstairs to check on the children anyway but they were sleeping peacefully and undisturbed. I couldn’t work out what had made the noise and the rest of the night I was on edge, bracing myself in case I heard it again.”

7. An extra guest

“My friend told me about something really creepy that happened to her when her friend invited her over. They were getting ready for a party together, one in the bedroom and one in the bathroom next door. My friend was doing her makeup in the bedroom mirror when she kept seeing someone poke their head round the door behind her. Assuming it was the other girl poking her head out from the bathroom she told her to stop, but the other girl insisted that she hadn’t done anything.

The other girl went downstairs and my friend stayed to finish her makeup alone. But she clearly wasn’t alone because the head poked back out again. Terrified, she ran downstairs and they never worked out who the extra guest was.”
