National Video Games Day: the most anticipated games of 2019

With releases such as Kingdom Hearts III, World of Warcraft Classic and Apex Legends, 2019 has already been a landmark year for video games.

The best part is that developers show no sign of slowing down, with more exciting video games in the next few months ensuring that 2019 goes out with a bang.

Pokemon Sword & Shield

Since Pokemon Go was released in the summer of 2017, the franchise has experienced a resurgence. Subsequently, with the much-hyped Sword and Shield due to be released in November, it is clear that after all this time, Nintendo—and the timeless Pokemon franchise—remain at the top of their game.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

With The Last Jedi completing Star War's third trilogy in December, this game invites you to explore the rise of the Empire in a gripping narrative set shortly after the events of Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith. The game is released in mid-November, so you'll be able to feed your appetite ahead of Episode Nine's release as well as finding out more about the extended Star Wars universe.

Life is Strange 2: Episode 5

The final instalment of this gripping and unique adventure game will complete the story of Sean and Daniel, which started in September 2018. The game has received positive reviews across the board and is available on several platforms.

Doom Eternal

This first-person shooter with a twist continues the battle against demons. You, as the Doom Slayer, return to Earth to find that it has been taken over demons. With a unique 'push-forward' approach—which encourages players to aggressively engage enemies to gain health and ammo—this is a game that will keep you entertained until the next National Video Games Day!

Death Stranding

This upcoming open-world action game from the creators of Metal Gear is, according to the team behind it, a 'completely new type of action game'. It explores life, death and everything in between, with the objective of the game being to reconnect the 'strands' of a walled-up, fragmented and isolated society.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Serving as a 'soft reboot' of the Modern Warfare sub-series, this Call of Duty hit will be the first instalment to support a cross-platform multiplayer function. Activision have also announced that they have scrapped the franchise's traditional season pass. For their 16th instalment, the game will be placed in a modern setting.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening

Originally released in 1993, this remake of the Game Boy adventure—the first Legend of Zelda game to feature on a handheld device—is being remastered and re-released to enchant a whole new generation of players on the Nintendo Switch. With early reviews looking promising, this looks like a rare example of a remake that actually pays off.

It's that time of year where EA Sports release their annual football simulation game, to the delight of FIFA fans and gamers across the globe.
