Met Gala 2019: what to expect from this year's event

The most famous fashion gala in the world comes back to the Metropolitan Museum of Art once again for the annual Met Gala, where celebrities pay $30,000 per ticket to celebrate the grand opening of the next exhibition.

Fashion’s biggest night out approaches with the 2019 Met Gala scheduled for May 6. This year’s red carpet promises to be one of the most fabulous yet. Earning an invite to the gala is no mean feat and this year’s list confirms some of the most high profile actors, designers and celebrities. Met Gala co-chair #annawintour revealed that nearly two hundred people have been named benefit committee members this year, including #blakelively, #lupitanyongo, #katyperry and designer #tomford. While the committee isn’t reflective of the Met Gala guest list, it's certainly true that of late there has been a stronger presence of Hollywood names on it. “48 per cent of the list” including Met Gala regulars #blakelively, Black Panther’s #chadwickboseman and #bradleycooper . Fashion designers also make up “32 per cent of the 2019 committee” and designers believed to be attending include #donatellaversace and #miucciaprada Credit: ES. What is the Met Gala?

The Met Gala is an annual event that takes place in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art to celebrate the launch of a new theme of art and fashion in the museum. Celebrities pay a hefty price of $30,000 for a ticket to the event and dress in fine custom clothing to match with the theme of the year.

This year's theme:

Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Harry Styles and Rihanna are just a handful of the famous faces that will be making attendance in costumes styled to this year's theme: 'Camp: Notes on Fashion'. 'Campy' fashion is described as the 'love of the unnatural', exaggerated fashion, so we can look forward to some shocking, out-of-this-world looks this year. The gala is taking place on the 6th of May.

When does it start?

The Met Gala will be hosted on the 6th of May 2019, starting at 7 pm.

Where can I watch it?

Met Gala isn't televised but can check out the looks on Instagram using the hashtag #MetGala

The best looks from last year's Met Gala:

Rihanna stole the show last year with a custom regal gown and crown from Maison Margiela, which took 750 hours to make and cost around $680,000.

Blake Lively looked gorgeous in a custom Versace gown and $2 million worth of jewellery alone. She'll have to put in a lot of thought to outdo that this year.

The worst looks from last years Met Gala:

Critics can be brutal, but here are some looks that just didn't make the cut for some people.

Kendall Jenner was not a favourite. People just didn't get how her look was anything to do with the 'Heavenly Bodies' theme.

Jaden Smith was considered too dressed-down in jeans and trainers, holding his record. One person commented: "i just....imagine showing up to a MET gala in jeans and hype shoes like that..."

Who do you think will stand out at this year's Met Gala? Who will be overlooked? Let us know in the comments.
