John Bercow

John Bercow's five best moments as House of Commons Speaker

Ah, John… a beacon of light after Brexit madness sprung us into a cold, unforgiving darkness.

It was announced that the Commons from now on would be ORDUH-less, after John Bercow's announcement stating his intention to step down as speaker to the applause of, erm, almost every MP.

John Bercow came to the position as a self-professed ‘far-right Conservative’ in 2009, but leaves it ten years later as not only a national treasure but also immortalised in meme form with a cult social media following.

So, in ORDUH to mourn the voice of a generation, here are some of his best moments as Speaker.

1. That time he schooled Boris Johnson for being sexist

Although he certainly doesn’t look like a feminist at first appearance, Bercow made it clear that there is no room for gender discrimination in his House and said as such to a sheepish future PM last year in a very scathing, and very public telling off.

2. Saving everyone from having to sit through May’s meaningful vote for the third time

I feel like one of the reasons he got such a big round of applause from MPs is because he put his foot down when it came to May’s slightly ‘persistent’ approach.

Hilariously, he was able to overrule the most powerful person in the country, troll the Government and prevent them from re-hashing the same, stale-ass deal.

3. His remix-worthy pronunciation of names

With his deep baritone voice and crisp private-school phonetics, would it be too far to say that Golden-Voice Bercow is to the UK what Morgan Freeman is to the US? Probably, but he has a spotless and meme-worthy record of searing certain names into the subconscious of the UK.

From Bambos Charalambos...

… Thangam Debbonaire…

… Mr Peter Bone…

… And a rendition of Jeremy Corbyn that wouldn’t look out of place on Glee.

4. Making his House a naughtiness-free zone

Maybe he’d had enough of Conservatives with their naughty frolicking in wheat fields, maybe it was the five-hour debate or maybe he had finally just lost the plot - either way, him screaming at Michael Gove to ‘BE A GOOD BOY’ was the most historic moment of 4th September.

Pity he resigned, maybe the next step was to give Rees Mogg a smack-bottom.

5. Becoming an all-round meme factory

From dedicated appreciation groups, T-shirts and even flags at festivals, it seems like John Bercow's piped Louis Theroux to the title of Most Quintessentially British Meme Lord.

You can probably respond to 90% of conversations using solely John Bercow quotes.

Like ‘Division'…

…’Unlock’...

And, obviously, John Bercow's famed catchphrase ‘Order’.

Bonus: Telling Graham Stewart, the Government whip that he doesn't give a 'flying flamingo' what he thinks.

We’ll miss you big B! Politics will be a lot more boring without you.
