Budget-friendly sober activities to do in Birmingham

For when you want to make plans that don't start with: 'Pub?'

For the nature lovers: Botanical Gardens

Admittedly, this is best for the spring and summer months, but if you find yourself on a random sunny Saturday morning lost on what to do, with only a few coins left of your weekly budget, head over to Botanical Gardens. With student entry less than a fiver, you and your mates can have a wholesome trip to the greenest, blooming spot in Birmingham. You could even visit the gardens' Pavilion Tea Room and live out your retirement dreams now, considering you won't have a chance to in the future.

Price rating £ - cheaper than buying a houseplant.
For the board game lovers: Escape Live

If your flat's monopoly games always end in a raging argument, someone flipping the table and questionable threats to each other's livelihoods, then you need to try an escape room. Because you're all working together, there's less chance for people to have a tantrum and storm out, mainly because, well, you can't. Escape Live in Birmingham has over 10 different stories to choose from, and will soon be adding the much-awaited Peaky Blinders Escape Rooms to their repertoire. Trip to the Garrison for afters anyone?

Price rating ££ - the more people you rally together the cheaper it is.
For the maybe drinkers: Ghetto Golf

A cult favourite based in Digbeth, Ghetto Golf is the crazy golf course with a twist. Being an over 18s course, it's the perfect mix of wacky putts (including a pub and bowling alley), neon Graffiti, DJs, American style BBQ food and a cocktail bar. You and your friends are guaranteed to be taken aback when you enter the art-infused warehouse that looks like something straight out of a 70s psychedelic rock music video. Located right next to Digbeth dining club and the Custard Factory, it's a great place to tee off the evening.

Price rating ££ - group discounts available (wink wink).
For the art students: Gallery Crawl

Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, Ikon, Eastside Projects, RBSA Gallery, the list goes on and on. From Pre-Raphaelite collections to independent street art, the Birmingham art scene is thriving and you should definitely make the most of it. Stuck on where to go? Just open the Birmingham Art Map and have a browse of what's on. The galleries in Birmingham are grouped in a few specific areas, so you can head to one place and visit a few in a day to get your daily culture fix and feel a little more sophisticated than having a night in Spoons.

Price rating FREE (until you head to the gift shop).
For the window shoppers: Digbeth Thrifting

From the curated pieces given a modern twist at Cow Vintage to the no-frills warehouse-style of Credit Crunchers Vintage, Digbeth is brimming with an eclectic mix of thrift stores. Home to events such as Birmingham's Vintage Kilo Sale, Digbeth is the place to go for edgy garms that you definitely won't see anywhere else, apart from on all the other students at Lab 11.

Price rating £-£££ - depends on how much cash you wanna splash.
For the film enthusiasts: Mockingbird Cinema

Offering Saturday morning film and brunch events, outdoor cinema experiences, re-runs of cult classics and movie marathons, the Mockingbird isn't your usual cinema. With screenings from a frugal £3.95 and popcorn that doesn't cost the earth, you'll be well in your budget whilst enjoying your cinematic favourites.

Price rating £-££ - events will differ but overall pretty good value for money.
