Are there any good green spaces in Birmingham?
Birmingham’s got a reputation for being one of Britain’s most industrial cities.
Once you start living here, you’ll soon realise that it’s not so bad. In fact, the city is filled with over 14 miles of public green spaces, many of which are a (figurative) stone’s throw from the University of Birmingham. Here’s just a few you can escape to:
Cannon Hill Park
Just a twenty-minute walk down Bristol Road from campus is one of the West Midlands’ best-known parks. With over 80 acres of parkland and 120 acres of woodland and conservation area, the park provides an area of serenity in between the university and the city centre. If you’re feeling childish, there’s also a 36-hole mini golf course, swan pedalos and a nature centre featuring red pandas.
Winterbourne House and Garden
If you remember to bring your university ID card, UoB students have free entry to Winterbourne, and can easily kill a couple of hours exploring the garden or relaxing at the edge of Edgbaston Reservoir. Located between the Guild of Students and the Vale on Edgbaston Park Road, students have no excuse not to check out Winterbourne.
Selly Oak Park
If you’ve waved goodbye to being a fresher, chances are you’ll already spend most of your time when you’re in Birmingham in Selly Oak. While the park in Selly is perhaps not the best on offer in the city, it is one of the closest. The Green-Flag award-winning park could be the perfect place for revising (or procrastinating) when exam season draws nearer.

This yet-to-open 12 acres of parkland, which is currently a building site slap in Old Joe’s shadow, will contain water features and a grass auditorium. Right now it might be the cause of some lecture-to-library detours, but when it opens in December it will be the perfectly-located green space for students- even if we’d rather have more study space.

Where can you take trips to the Amazon Rainforest and the Mediterranean in the same day without even having to board a plane? While that may be an exaggeration, the glasshouses at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens in Edgbaston replicate tropical and desert environments with their collection of species native to the regions.
