5 empowering TV shows that will inspire you to be a better person

Sometimes we seek more from our media than a quick laugh or emotional moment.

Here are some shows that are out there to make you laugh, cry and teach you a lesson.

1. One Day at a Time - Netflix

It would be difficult to think of a social issue that One Day at a Time hasn't picked up on. From consent to coming-out, this show is filled with important conversations and stories from minorities that always leave you with something thought-provoking to take away. There are three seasons available to stream, but Netflix is keen for more viewers before it's renewed for a fourth. So, get to know the Alvarez family by laughing, crying and growing with them.

2. The Marvellous Mrs Maisel - Amazon Prime

Seeing a woman succeed in a male-dominated profession is always satisfying to watch, and with the beautiful direction that The Marvellous Mrs Maisel offers, as well as the amazing cast, there's no reason not to binge this show. Midge's journey from middle-class Jewish housewife to a popular, renowned comedian is one that will no doubt inspire you to peruse a dream or talent you never knew you had. The two-seasons of brilliant writing, direction and acting is definitely worth the time to sit and enjoy.

3. Brooklyn Nine-Nine - NBC

It's not easy to find truly diverse shows that present characters as being more than minorities. Brooklyn Nine-Nine, however, is full of well-rounded, developed characters who not only fight crime but learn lessons about themselves and each other. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is the show for you if you're looking to be represented and inspired by seeing minority groups in positions of power. It's guaranteed you'll find someone you'll be able to relate to. Season five has just come to Netflix, and Season six is airing now, so it's the perfect time to get caught up!

4. The Good Place - Netflix

If you're looking for more fantasy in your watching, The Good Place is a really enjoyable experience. Literally a show about earning your spot in heaven, the show acts as a How-To-Morality guide. Every episode has some kind of ethical question at its heart. It's easy to learn along with protagonist Eleanor, as she learns her moral lessons and avoids the Bad Place. So, if you're in the mood for a lesson from the adorable and wise Chidi, definitely factor this show into your watch-list.

5. Glow - Netflix

It's common to feel let down by the way female characters are represented. Sometimes the women on screen are just screaming to be developed. Female-dominated shows like Glow are giving actresses that chance to delve deep into their characters and be a part of a powerful, diverse and talented cast. It's a show that will inspire you to pursue something new, and work hard to achieve something great.
