5 must-have gifts for book lovers

Book lovers make easy gift receivers.

What better to get a book lover than – not only a great story – but a great story protected by a beautiful hardback. The following publishers take much-loved classics and bestow upon them the covers they deserve.

The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood – Vintage Classics.

Hulu’s successful adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s classic, haunting dystopia – where women, like Offred, are seen to serve one function: breed – is bound to see a rise in sales over the Christmas period. Vintage Classics have a stunning hardback cover available in block red with an imprint of a handmaid in the centre. The dust jacket is black and contains a larger image of the handmaid in the Gilead colours of red and white. The artwork is designed by the prize-winning artist, Noma Bar. Page edges have been spray-painted red, and a red ribbon acts as a pretty but redundant bookmark. You won’t be able to put it down.

Songs of Innocence and Experience, William Blake – Penguin Classics

Perhaps who you are considering buying for is more inclined to poetry than prose, or for someone who prefers a quick read. At sixty-four pages, William Blake’s Songs of Innocence and Experience is one of the best-loved poetry collections of all time. Juxtaposing the innocence of how children perceive the world against the gritty experience of adults, will even have poetry-haters left with something to think about. Many students will have experienced Blake’s work at A Level, so what better time to revisit him without the stress of reading him for an exam in mind? This clothbound edition is part of a release of ten poets by Penguin Classics. The warm, welcoming yellow cover is ironic, considering the context of the latter, and even the former, poems.

Peter Pan, J.M. Barrie – Harper Collins

A person’s love of Disney certainly does not stop when they reach adolescence or full-grown adulthood. Although Disney’s version of Peter Pan differs from its source material somewhat, fans of the 2003 live version, starring Jeremy Sumpter will quickly pick up on how faithful that version is to J. M. Barrie’s classic. Harper Collins’ deluxe edition is filled with beautiful colours, illustrations and interactive features designed by Minalima, including a detailed map of Neverland. The turquoise cover captures the essence of the ocean, and having Peter, Tinkerbell and the Darling children’s silhouettes in gold, reflects the magic and adventure of an innocent age.

The Beauty and the Beast, Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve – Harper Collins

To mark the release of Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast back in March, starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens, Harper Collins teamed up again with Minalima to reimagine Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve’s classic fairy tale, published under its original title: The Beauty and the Beast. This unabridged edition is complete with rich, colourful artwork and nine 3D interactive features, including a detailed fold out of the Beast’s palace. The pink and blue cover captures pivotal moments of the tale, including the all-important rose. Fans of Disney’s two successful and much-loved adaptations will not regret investing time in this beautifully presented original source material.

Harry Potter Series, J.K. Rowling – Bloomsbury

To celebrate twenty years of Harry Potter capturing the imagination of children and adults alike, Bloomsbury released a brand-new collection of Harry Potter covers by artist Jonny Duddle. The first captures Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Hagrid arriving for the first time at Hogwarts. Some covers remain similar to the originals published between 1997-2007 (Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince). Whereas the artist has opted for a change in what moment is to be captured on the cover for others (Philosopher’s Stone, Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban, Deathly Hallows). The colours used are bold, drawing attention to one particular block colour dominating per cover.

Any of the above classics will surely have any book lover smiling!
